OUR NAME IS AS UNIQUE AS THE FURNITURE WE SELL

NOVA ZEMBLA is a fictional country from the novel Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov, and means "new land."   With each visit to the store customers can discover something new and interesting, as we constantly introduce new designs, styles and product.

Nova Zembla opened in August 1998 carrying custom upholstery and a few home accessories.  Since then the store has expanded three times and added a large warehouse in Red Hook; we now offer a full range of home furnishings, including eco-friendly hardwood furniture, more than 80 styles of sofas and chairs, hundreds of lamps, as well as rugs, mirrors, coat racks, bedding, table linens, coasters, stationary, pottery and more.

Nova Zembla's success is based on our commitment to value: Providing quality furniture at a great price.  We work diligently to keep our overhead as low as possible, and we keep our margins very thin.  We firmly believe we provide the best overall value of any comparable retail store in the tri-state area.

ENVIRONMENTALLY & SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FURNITURE

Our success is not built on depleting natural resources or exploiting a Third World work-force.  In fact, much of our product is made by small companies and individual craftspeople in the U.S.  Our wood furniture is made in Jaipur, India, where over the past several years Nova Zembla has established a close relationship with a family-run manufacturer, Bob Exports, which exclusively makes Nova Zembla's own designs as well as custom pieces for our clients. 

All our wood furniture is made from environmentally-sustainable or recycled hardwoods (see the ECO-FRIENDLY link for more details).  We also are developing special pieces made from scrap wood, so that all raw materials are used in production; Bob Exports even captures its sawdust waste for sale to another user.  

Bob Exports also is very sensitive to the needs of its employees, providing health care, housing subsidies (so that workers can move their families close to the factory), transportation assistance and paid festival days - all a rarity in India (and other developing nations).  The result is a dedicated workforce that has developed expertise and craftsmanship specific to Nova Zembla product.    

CONVENIENCE

Nova Zembla has a large warehouse in Red Hook, which allows us to keep many products, particularly wood, upholstery and lamps, in stock.  Moreover, Nova Zembla has patiently cultivated special relationships with many of our vendors, meaning our customers often get priority.  In fact, custom lead times for much our product (for example, upholstery/7-9 weeks; lamps/3-5 weeks, most accessories/2-4 weeks) are well below the industry standard.  On our wood items, we receive container shipments every 6-8 weeks, meaning customers never have to wait too long for specially-designed items.
